The beauty of the time in between times

It’s that weird time of year where it feels like we're in a sort of void of timelessness, we're not sure what day it is, routine is out the window, still eating leftovers...the year has pretty much ended but the new one hasn’t begun yet.

All at once, it's disorientating, discombobulating and delicious in it’s suspension.

Here’s a piece I wrote this time last year -

The time in between times

In the lull, the pregnant pause.

In the suspension of what was and what will be. Drink it in, soak it up.

The time in between times.

Reflect on your best and learn from your worse.

Float in the suspension of non-judgement.

Move your body slowly and intentionally, shifting anything that’s stuck there.

Meet yourself and acknowledge what was,

For your mind and body to be ready for what will be.

Everything and nothing, is ahead of you.

Next week, I’ll be starting the new year in silent meditation on my annual Vipassana (just for 3 days again this time. You can read more about my first experience of 10 days of silence and meditation here).

Did you know?

Daniel Goleman, well known for bringing the concept of Emotional Intelligence and the practice of compassion to business and successful leadership, was a student of Vipassana in the 1970’s. For more on how this practice has been the foundation for many brilliant teachers, here's a great New York Times article on S.N.Goenka, the successful Burmese businessman that 'brought mindfulness to the West' through Vipassana.

So, before you see in the new year, make the most of this time in between times - read, reflect, plan, connect, love, nourish, savour, and, however you’re starting your 2020, do it intentionally, mindfully and with compassion for yourself.
